We had a wonderful experience working with Studio Sabat. They're professional, attentive, and have a great eye for detail. Whenever any issues arose, she was proactive and quick to help resolve them, making the whole process smooth and enjoyable. We would highly recommend Studio Sabat to anyone looking for dedicated and talented professionals.

Homeowners, Cove Residence

Overlooking Balmain Cove is where this waterfront luxury apartment is located, a home which was faced with dated finishes and disjointed layouts.

Initially wanting an aesthetic refresh of the space, the homeowners approached the studio with the goal of a kitchen and bathroom renovation alone. After exploring the concept designs prepared by Studio Sabat and realising the potential functionality of their space, the design journey really began. Driven by the homeowner’s design brief, we focused on improving the functionality of the space without compromising on refreshing its aesthetics.

As the plumbing had to remain in place given the constraints of working in an apartment, we instead worked with what we had, not against it. Every detail, from the entryway to the custom joinery wall, is deliberate and designed to unify the interiors in a cohesive way.

The facade of Cove Residence visible from the balcony frames Balmain Cove, just as now the internal joinery frames the homeowner’s everyday lives. Everything on the outside of the home is picturesque, to say the least, meaning that what goes on inside needs to be framed just as beautifully. A big part of the cohesion in the home is the joinery, connecting the TV unit, pantry, bar area, and more, all with the intention to open up the space.

Take the column in the kitchen, for example – instead of removing it, we thickened it, highlighting the element to balance the newly introduced pantry in the space. The intention behind the kitchen island placement was also to improve the kitchen and dining space flow, bridging the disconnect between the two.

We also focused on spatial composition heavily throughout this project. Sometimes, by intentionally reducing the size of a space, you invite more warmth and intention into the space by introducing a moment of pause for the users and visitors. A simple example is the entryway. Instead of an open-plan arrival, we intentionally enclosed the entry volume by introducing a wall that separates it from the adjoining spaces, strengthening the spatial hierarchy and creating a defined threshold into the home.

Our projects always begin with a natural stone selected by the clients; those of which are comprised of beautiful colours that work effortlessly together. After selecting one stone for the kitchen and a second for the bathrooms, subsequent designs and aesthetics were quickly formulated with the natural palette of those materials as inspiration.
